Three members of legendary Manc band The Smiths will reunite this year for a special UK tour.
The band, consisting of former drummer Mike Joyce, bassist Andy Rourke and second guitarist Craig Gannon, will be joined by the Manchester Camerata Orchestra.
‘Classically Smiths’ will debut this summer, a unique orchestral take on some of the band’s most famous songs.
The orchestra have previously worked on the Hacienda Classical project with Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, which will be touring this year before performing at Castlefield Bowl as part of Manchester’s Sounds Of The City.
Smiths’ songs expected to be given a classical make over include: ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’, ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ and ‘A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours’.
Talking to the Manchester Evening News, XS’ very own Mike Joyce said: “I’m massively excited to be playing with Andy and Craig again, but introducing a full orchestra into the mix takes this to another level.
“There’ll be Smiths classics in the set, but I can’t wait to play the songs that have never been heard live before.
“With the addition of an orchestra, it will sound as totally unique as it will immense. I’m really looking forward to fans being able to hear the songs in a way they’ve never been heard before, either on record or live. On the stage, or out front, this is going to be quite an experience for us all.”
Craig Gannon told XS Manchester: "These fantastic songs are going to be heard in a new setting."
The band have been confirmed to play at Manchester Apollo on 28 June, London O2 Academy Brixton on 29 June and Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on 2 July.
Tickets for the above dates go on sale on Friday, 26 January.
