Souness back City for Premier League Glory.
Former Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has tipped Manchester City to lift the Premier League trophy next season.
Speaking on the XS Manchester Football Social the former midfielder said he thought City had the least to do reach the level required:
“The hardest thing to get right in football is the creative players and your goalscorers and your cre-ative players. If City gets the defence right they’ll be the team next year.”
The Citizens defensive displays have been much improved this season with the return of Vincent Kompany but Souness still thinks that Pep Guardiola needs to open his cheque book in the sum-mer to sure up things at the back.
“Sadly you can't reply on Vincent Kompany. You need a partner for John Stones and for me the ideal one would be Virgil Van Dijk. Him and Stones could be a great partnership for the best part of a decade”.
Southampton defender Van Dijk has been a long time target for Guardiola who himself knows he needs to improve if his stay in East Manchester is going to be a long one as he admitted this week that if he had still been at Bayern Munich or Barcelona he would have probably been sacked by now and Souness says if the Spanish manager does go then they’re isn’t always a need to go abroad when appointing a new boss.
“There are lots of good English managers, young British managers out there that could do the same job and they wouldn’t take three to four months to work out what our football is about. They’d get it on day one”
