MIF 2017: XS Manchester Recommendations
The Manchester International Festival is here and we have picked out our highlights...
Manchester Street Poem
"Conceived by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith from Underworld, Manchester Street Poemwill spotlight the stories of those who find themselves homeless in the city – in a work where the catch-all term ‘homeless’ will give way to individuality, identity and integrity.
Manchester Street Poem will bring to life the stories of people who are homeless in Manchester. The work is both fleeting performance and compelling installation: as Hyde covers the walls of the venue with words and phrases drawn from the streets, the space will fill with a powerful soundtrack built on snatches and fragments recorded by Smith all over the city."
Party skills for the end of the world
"Storm clouds are gathering as the world teeters on the edge. It’s time to look at all the good things in life – and the fear that stops us enjoying them…
Party Skills for the End of the World is a wild, immersive show that will teach you how to get by when the end comes and it’s time to celebrate everything that’s made life worth living. Staged in a unique Salford building, it’s a site-specific show full of surprises, taking you on a wild ride into the depths of your imagination before sending you out into the night full of curiosity and wonder."
New Order and Liam Gillick: So it Goes.
"New Order take over Stage 1 of Manchester’s iconic Old Granada Studios for this special series of intimate shows, created in collaboration with two close associates: visual artist Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York; and composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent collaborator with the band."
Machynlleth Comes to Manchester
"This summer, we’re bringing a little bit of West Wales to Manchester as the Machynlleth Comedy Festival decamps for a weekend at MIF.
Every spring, 6,000 people descend on the tiny Welsh town of Machynlleth (population: 2,235) for one of Europe’s most delightful and unusual comedy events. The small but perfectly formed Machynlleth Comedy Festival encourages comics to experiment and have fun with their material in some very intimate venues, with shows staged everywhere from the local bowling club to the ancient Welsh parliament building."
"The return of Ride was greeted with rapturous acclaim when they reunited two years ago. This summer, the Oxford quartet release their first album in 20 years, produced by DJ, remixer and producer Erol Alkan. Hear it live at this exclusive Manchester show."
"Six years on from their last appearance in the city, Arcade Fire return to Manchester for this one-off show at Castlefield Bowl. Since the release of their stunning debut album Funeral, the Grammy Award-winning Canadian band have won a well-earned reputation as one of the most exhilarating live acts around. We’re thrilled to be bringing them back to Manchester as part of MIF17 and Sounds of the City"
"Albert Square will again become Festival Square this summer – and it’s getting a new look for MIF17. We’ve commissioned Paloma Gormley of Practice Architecture and Nicolas Henninger from the Office for Crafted Architecture, two of the country’s most exciting young designers, to take a hands-on approach to Festival Square – they’ll design and build a range of new structures where you’ll be able to eat, drink and take in the Festival buzz."
The Welcoming Party
"Come and help us give a warm welcome to some new arrivals in this inspiring immersive show from Theatre-Rites, one of Europe’s most imaginative theatre companies.
The Welcoming Party will take you on an exciting journey through a historic hidden warehouse at the Museum of Science & Industry. You’ll walk alongside people who have travelled here from towns and cities far beyond Manchester, all looking for a place where they can feel safe and sound. And along the way, perhaps you can help them find what they’re looking for."
